ISAF: Security Awareness Week

During the week commencing 27th April, 2009, as part of the Information Security Awareness Forum (ISAF): Security Awareness Week, the SANS Institute is making it's popular online Security Awareness course freely available to the general public.

SEC 351: Computer & Network Security Awareness

The Computer and Network Security Awareness course is offered for the individual just beginning to explore computer security. This course is designed to teach participants with little to no security experience important concepts and technology that every Internet user should know. In this class, you will learn about many different threats, antivirus programs, firewalls, anti-spyware, identity theft, Phishing, how to create strong passwords and more. This course will raise your awareness and give you the basic skills you need to protect yourself from various threats on the Internet whether you are at home, on the road or at work.

You will benefit from this course if you have ever wanted to understand computer and information security or if you know you are vulnerable, but do not know how to make yourself more secure. After taking this course, you will have built a basic foundation of knowledge to protect you and your computer including a real appreciation for computer and information security.

Instructions

Open a web browser and go to: www.SANS.org

Create a portal account by selecting the 'Create an account' option inside the 'Portal' menu:

Make sure you check the box next to the SEC 351: Computer and Network Security Awareness course option.

Please be sure to enter the discount code SECWEEK09 at the bottom of the page and make sure that the cost to you is $0 before you continue.

Please note that on the next screen you will see a shipping charge for books. You will NOT receive any books and you will NOT be charged this shipping fee.

You must select how you heard of SANS and you can simply select "Other" and enter ISAF into the field.

Check the box to the right of "I have read and agree to the SANS Policies".

In the payment section, do NOT enter any credit card information; simply click on the "Phone In Credit Card" purchase button to complete the order.

You will receive an invoice by email still asking you to pay the shipping charges, ignore it, your order will be completed for you and you will get access to the course within 24 hours, unless you process your order on a weekend, in which case you should have access by the end of business on Monday.

Please note that this course will be FREE to all until midnight on the 3rd May, 2009.

You will then be taken to the SANS OnDemand area where you will see a drop down selection box where you can choose the courses that you are registered for. Select the "Security 351: Computer & Network Security Awareness" option (not the DEMO).

Under the administration area you will see your status for this course and you will also see a link where you can start the course.
